Health & Diet
Health, Diet, Nutrition and Exercise form an essential part of our living and bodies. A lot has changed since the Industrial Revolution
and so have our lifestyles. Our bodies were used to a lot of physical hard labor and this kept us in good shape. Of course the medical
facilities were minimal and to the poor absolutely out of reach.
The scenario has changed since then Diet forms an integral part of our living. In our 20s and 30s we require 1800 calories to sustain
ourselves, however in our 50s we require 140 calories to sustain ourselves. Therefore age plays a major role on our diet. As does exercise.
With technological advancements and medical advancements, the geriatric population is living for a longer time. However they are becoming
more susceptible to lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, arthritis etc.
The Western World: How we eat today
Diets
have over a period of time become rich in saturated fats. Saturated fats are fine as long as one does enough exercises to burn those
fats. If not these saturated fats clog up our blood vessels and artery systems leading to hypertension, heart failures, high blood pressure,
obesity, diabetes etc. For example, Americans like everything big, big cars, big houses, big burgers etc. The McDonalds outlets in America
sell more Mac Burgers than the rest of the world. In size they are 1.5 times bigger than the burgers that retail in Europe or Asia. These
add up excess fats in our bodies.
Diets must include a balance of all vitamins and minerals.
Whether they are vegetarian diets or non - vegetarian diets. That means that there should be an adequate amount of calcium, phosphorus,
Vitamin A, B and K as well as proteins (the building blocks of life), carbohydrates and fats. Not all fats are bad. Fats keep our body
functioning and are essential for making our skin and hair glow. Therefore the body must derive nutrition from the diet intake. Something
as simple as eating a whole fruit is nutritious but drinking the same fruit juice is adding empty calories. This is because fruits
are rich in anti oxidants and have fiber content, while fruit juices have only empty calories, which creep inside your body.
For leading a healthy life, exercise is as important, remember you have to work out your calories. It keeps your weight in check
and many diseases at bay. It also increases your concentration and makes you more alert. Remember to ask your Doctor before you start
any form of exercise. All physical activities are considered exercise such as swimming, dancing, aerobics, gymnastics horse riding
etc. choose the exercise that you would consider the best and enjoy the most. Remember its necessary to eat right & nutritious
food, exercise and have a positive attitude to life to lead a healthy life.
